Rob Cross burst onto the darts scene in a big way when he won the PDC World Darts Championship on his Alexandra Palace debut in 2018. The Sussex-born electrician joined the professional circuit at the start of 2017, having caught the eye with a run to the last 32 of the 2016 UK Open as a Riley’s amateur qualifier. Ahead of his triumph at the Palace, Cross won four Players Championship titles and reached the final of the European Championship during his first campaign on the PDC tour.

An impressive first year on the tour saw ‘Voltage’ enter the 2017/18 World Championship as the 20th seed, and he went all the way to the title with a nail-biting 6-5 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals followed by a 7-2 thrashing of Phil Taylor in the final, in what was the last match of Taylor’s career as a professional. Since his memorable triumph in north London, Cross has continued to add more major silverware to his trophy cabinet, winning the World Matchplay in 2019 and a pair of European Championships in 2019 and 2021 to cement his position as one of the best players in the world.

The Rob Cross World Championship success story on debut is one of the most memorable in the history of the tournament. ‘Voltage’ went into the 2017/18 edition of the PDC World Darts Championship as one of the debutants, having climbed into the world’s top 20 in less than a year, and he continued his meteoric rise by lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy. Cross defeated the legendary Phil Taylor 7-2 in sets in the final, averaging 107 and clinching the title with a 140 checkout.

In March 2025, Rob Cross threw his first televised nine-dart leg in the PDC. During the Premier League night in Brighton, ‘Voltage’ struck perfection with two 180s and a 141 finish in his match against Nathan Aspinall. It was one of a record five nine-dart legs during the 2025 Premier League, the most ever in a single Premier League season, with Luke Humphries, Luke Littler and Gerwyn Price (twice) also throwing perfect legs during the tournament.

Rob Cross: Career Highlights

Rob Cross has already earned more than £3 million in prize money since joining the PDC main tour in 2017. The former electrician secured his first PDC tour card through the Challenge Tour rankings in 2016, along with Ryan Searle, and wasted no time in making his mark on the professional circuit. Cross won the PDC World Darts Championship at the end of his debut season, beating arguably the two greatest ever players, Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor, in the semi-finals and final to become world champion for the first time. That triumph at Alexandra Palace saw Cross earn £400,000 in prize money to climb into the top four of the rankings.

‘Voltage’ has continued to lift big silverware since then, including the prestigious World Matchplay in 2019, along with a pair of European Championship crowns in 2019 and 2021. Cross was part of the 2025 Premier League - his sixth season playing in the biggest roadshow in darts - where he has qualified for the play-offs on two occasions, losing out in the semi-finals in 2018 and the final in 2019. Cross’ success extends to the World Series and European Tour circuits too, with the Hastings man winning titles in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands and the USA.

The Rob Cross vs Michael van Gerwen rivalry has provided plenty of entertainment in recent years, with the duo having faced each other on more than 40 occasions in PDC tournaments. The most famous meeting came in the 2017/18 PDC World Darts Championship semi-finals, with ‘Voltage’ winning in a sudden-death leg thriller. In a dramatic final set on the Alexandra Palace stage, van Gerwen missed match darts to win the set 6-4 and 6-5, and Cross took advantage to pin double eight and advance to the final on his World Championship debut. The pair have also met in several major finals, including in the Premier League, European Championship and Players Championship Finals.
