Devon Petersen has blazed a trail for African darts and is a popular player on the circuit. Nicknamed ‘The African Warrior’, his charisma and entertaining walk-on dance routines have earned him a legion of fans. Born in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, Petersen was introduced to darts by his father George and in his younger years would practice the game for hours after school with his friends in a small garage.

The South African-born thrower has been competing on the professional circuit since 2009. One of his earliest big stage appearances came at the 2009 South African Masters, in Johannesburg, and he was given a set of darts by the legendary Phil Taylor, which he started to throw with.

Petersen won a tour card at Q-School in 2015 to join the professionals on the PDC tour, and a year later made the decision to relocate to the UK. He based himself in Bradford, but his football allegiance is with Liverpool and comes from his childhood growing up in South Africa. He told the Heart and Hand Podcast: “Our house was Liverpool. There was no chance of me supporting another team and I’m so glad I did. There was a small handful of Liverpool fans at our school as well.”
